--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, you actually DO have a really good idea what that Diploma Exam will be like. We've already done some poetry questions in the multiple choice format and we're about to do some essay style multiple choice format questions as well. The multiple choice exam is 3 hours long with 70 questions total with some of them linked or connected to more than one piece.

The part A diploma exam has two parts to it. The major part worth 60 percent is just like the one you're writing on Tuesday for Blindness. "What are the author's ideas about ...." I've given you all of the questions since 1996. The minor part of that same exam, the personal response, is worth 40 percent and it is a bit different from what you've ever written. We'll get into that in December and you can practice them during Christmas. Basically you can write any response you want to a series of texts -prose, poem, picture- and you can write creatively if you want, as long as it's not a poem. (No poems accepted.) Some people have written journals, emails, discussion board entries (hey!), radio plays, letters, essays, short stories, plays, satires, personnas, just to name a few. I'll be giving you models to read and mark (!)

The thing is to work past the nervousness and enjoy the challenge and strutt your stuff a bit; throw in the odd semi colon: show 'em you got stuff! Question, argue, and write coherently. Show different sides to the same issue, etc. Show the reader that you've read something and thought about it insightfully. Now is that that hard?

Wait... does that mean that weu have to write 2 different things??? There's 2 parts to the written??? What do they think we are...robots?? (hehe) But seriously... we have to write an essay... and a personal responce?? (*sigh*) I'm nervous all over again.

Not to worry! You have 3 hours to do this. Two of them will be on the major assignment (known as the critical/analytical) and one hour will be on the minor assignment, known as the personal response. You'll do the personal response first -as a warm-up to the topic- and then the critical last. Of course, we're ONLY focusing on the critical/analytical for tomorrow. The personal response is actually kind of fun.

Just hearing that large term "Diploma" makes me get butterflies. Whenever I think diploma... I think University. It always throws me off track whenever I think about University. Lets just say I'm intimidated by the tall bulidings, the large textbooks, and the thousands of people who are inside them

It's scary to think that this is the last year of high school...since kindergarten we've worked towards grade 12...eventually we work towards university perhaps...but basically our whole lives we work towards graduating grade 12 and high school...and we're months away from reaching that goal...scary.

Yeah, it's so cool. You guys will never look back: well, you might for a little bit but then you'll just have so much fun, meet so many interesting people, and learn so much. The best part's yet to come, so don't be intimidated by it. You BELONG there. The tall buildings and the textbooks, and the large classes are only a mirage -visual cues that don't mean anything at all. Hamlet said, "I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space were it not for bad dreams." All you have to do it not to WORRY about it with "bad dreams." You all have so much to be confident about. (But that's not to say I wasn't scared either; I was! I spent two years sticking my tongue out at all those tall buildings every time I went by them because I knew I had to go there some day and felt that same kind of pit in my stomach that you feel.) But after the second week, you really get the hang of it and it's not so bad. And if you go next year, you'll be going with all your peers, or at least many of them, so you're bound to know a few people -if not in your class at least in the halls or the treadways or in Hub Mall or the SU building or up in RAT or the Boiler Lounge. Need I say more?

As far as the diploma goes, Paul Kane does really well. We are usually 3 to 6% above the provincial average, particularly in the written Part A. We are just barely above in the multiple choice portion of the exam, Part B. That's because many students don't read enough or build their vocabulary enough because they don't want to use any accordian construction paper foldouts with which to build them. Hopefully reading Great Expectations will build you vocabulary a bit more. Paul Kane's average on the whole diploma is about 72%. (I'll have to double check that though. Obviously it changes every semester.)

And I'm still super nervous for my diplomas lol

I only have 2 diploma's this semester; and I'm not really too nervous about the English one.... so theres only 1 that I'm dreading.

For those of you who haven't done any diploma's yet; don't stress out too much... buy a key and study.. Its really not that bad. Its just another test; albeit one that is worth alot. It seems horrible and hard; but the teachers prepare you enough for it... like you'll get tons of practice exams and whatnot. As long as you do them, and actually work on learning the stuff you've forgotten/had difficulty with, you'll do fine.

Thats from my own experiance anyways... I did really really really badly in a course, but then got 76% on the diploma; which for me is REALLY good, considering.

I think that these diplomas and all these crazy tests are ridiculous. Alberta's education is really difficult to do well in. Honestly, it shouldn't be that hard to excel but it really is. Do all these diplomas and exams really matter when we get out into the world on our own. I suppose we need them to get into post secondary. But knowing all this information, is it really going to help us in the real world? We may be book smart but are we going to be life smart and make good decisions in our lives?

Interesting thoughts --

To address "left" directly -- as a teacher (and I am speaking strictly for myself, NOT Mr. G-D or anyone else), I have some reservations about the way the Diploma Exam is designed and how much it's worth, but on the whole I'm a big supporter of the testing program in Alberta.

Will they matter when you get out into the world on your own? The answer is absolutely yes. What you study itself may not be part of your daily life -- unless you go into a biology field, for example, you'll eventually forget most of the stuff you've studied in Bio 30 -- but the pressure situation those exams put you in will be repeated over and over again in your life, in post-secondary education, on a jobsite, etc. Just the process of studying, being disciplined, and so on will help you immensely no matter what you end up doing. There will be a lot of situations where you simply have to perform, no excuses and no questions asked. The Diploma Exams prepare you for that.

The "will I ever need to know this?" question is one that students often ask -- it's a great question, and it always needs to be asked. My typical response is maybe not, but knowledge is often more than just about what you need. If we only worried about what we needed, if we just took care of our basic needs, where would we be? Our world would resemble the world you see in Blindness. We are about so much more than just what we "need". I knew I was going into English Education in grade 12, but I took Bio 30 and Physics 30 because I was interested, and now I read the odd science article in the paper and I can follow it. I took Art History in university not because I "needed" it, but because I was interested, and now I can go to the Baroque Masters exhibit at the Edmonton Art Gallery and know a bit about what's there. You will probably never "need" Shakespeare, but it will enrich your mind and soul if you allow it to, and will make you a deeper, more thoughtful human being. That may not have economic value, that may not translate into the direct skills you need to do a job with a narrow focus, but can you really put a price tag on it?

The other big thing I like about the Diploma Exams is that it makes the playing field level for all students in the province. Students who go to a small grades K-12 school in a northern community and those who go to a big high school in Edmonton or St. Albert are held to the same independent standard, and I think that's great. I started my teaching career in Lac La Biche, and people who graduated from there in the 70s and early 80s will tell you (I heard this story several times) that they were sort of made fun of in university, and told that the marks they earned from their "small town country schools" weren't equivalent to those earned in a big city high school. The Diploma Exam takes that away, which I think is great.

Anyway, that ended up being much longer than I thought it would, but you know those crazy English teachers when they get going--

Agreed. After moving to Alberta, my avg. has dropped severely.

Do any other provinces do these standarized tests? No where else where I've lived have they had them...

really?? I never knew that. I knew Alberta had one of the harder systems, but I didn't know they didn't have standardized tests other places!

I think education is really important, and that it is necessary to know this stuff. Do I think you need to know log rythms (spelling??) to go shopping?? no. Do you need to know the name of plant cells to plant a garden? no. But overall, you learn so much and you can connect things so much better because of education. Did you know that the average person around the world only has the education of a grade 4 student?? Now doesn't that just seem out of this world?? Truth is, we learn so much and it helps to do so well, even if we aren't aware of it.

Personally I don't think that one test should pretty much decide how your future will go (aka: whether you graduate, go to universtiy or get a much needed scholarship) but I think they force people to take the schooling more seriously. I don't think they measure some of the important things we may or may not know, but I do think overall it's better to have them, then to not. And if you do really bad you can always come back and upgrade right??

My average is going down too, or atleast it's not what I would like it to be. There's so many courses I'm taking because I'm not exactly sure what I want to be when I grow up so I'm trying to keep my otions open, but it's killing me!! I'm taking 6 courses this semester. hehe. With a ton of extra-curricular activities on top of it that eat up my life!! I barely have time to hang out and go to concerts any more, but I'm strating to get the hang of it, and I think my grades are picking back up. yay. Besides, if this is what university is like, I might as well get used to it now. hehe.

I'm nervous for university...if you think about how nervous you were going into high school....university is so much worse for nervousness!!! lol Everything changes...we don't hang out with our friends so much, we have to go to work to pay bills, soon we move out (if not already)...I mean, EVERYTHING changes...and that's scary.

Yes, bring photo ID with you -anything you have: student ID or a drivers license, anything. Bring last year's student ID if you want. Bring your Grade 7 ID, whatever. If you forget, you'll have to get a teacher to vouch for you, that you are who you say you are. They will also get you to fill out a form. Remember, your pictures are in SIRS, the attendance program.

I wish you clarity and good luck tomorrow.

Scott

You guys are lucky. Your Social 30, they divide the two parts up and they are written on serperate days. I wrote Social 30 in summer school, and they had Part A and Part B it on the same day! There was only an hour rests inbetween. 1 hour was very little and not enough

I did my bio 20 exam on thursday.. we'll see how that went. Other than that, I have the physics diploma tomorrow... which Im pretty much screwed for. I can do the math, but I dont have a chance at remembering 5 months of theory... then theres just the english part b... which im not too concerened about. I mean, obviously I am worried about doing well... but its not like you can really study. If I cant read now, theres not much chance of learning how to by thursday.

Only do ONSIDE if you have some seriously strong work ethic... otherwise you wont do the tests on time. Trust me. I went into Math 30 ONSIDE repeatedly telling myself that I would do the work, study, and do everything on time... lets just say that didn't happen.

How does onside work for core classes? Is it just reading the textbook and studying all the info so you can write each test? Do you still have to write essays? Could you study really hard and take all the tests in a month's time and get the course over with?
I have all my Social notes from last year, so there's no point in attending class. I just need to study better!

Well... for math anyways... your given books to learn from, and you basically teach yourself. There are teachers to help (in my case Mrs. Chanasyck), but good luck finding them... and if you do, they're not much help... or it wasn't for me anyways. And you 'supposed' to do homework that the book gives you in the textbook... and then, when you finish each module book (there were 7), there were 2 tests to take for them. And you could start the test... give up and go back and finish it... and go back... and go back... and then they would mark it... and let you re-do the questions you got wrong.. and re-do them.. and re-do them... lol. It was a joke, pretty much. So, once you realize you can just keep re-doing the tests, you learn to stop doing the homework. Its a horrible cycle. And ya, thats all there was for me anyways... I was supposed to do a 'math 30 final, but not the diploma'... but I never did. Mrs. Chanasyck was gone, anyways.

I just think that learning at my own pace would be better for me, then I don't have to worry about copying down the right notes, missing notes, and uselessly studying for tests I'm not ready for...see I'm not a good note-taker and I always end up losing them....so I think if I did onside, I wouldn't have to worry about missing notes that we copied in class, or losing any of my notes...or whatever. I just think it might be a little better for me...

I did math 10 onside. Of course I had only half a term to do it (long story) but if you're a procrastinator your extra time won't matter. Math onside sucks you have to be able to sit down with yourself and force yourself to learn. You become teacher and student its exactly what 'Anne' says it is. For social I don't know but I heard that onside with the other class's is really easy but its not reccommended you do it if your doing the diploma because of the fact that its really easy. You learn barely anything. Could you imagine taking english onside would you know all that extra stuff that Mr.Gibson taught us? Would you have been as prepared going into the diploma? I think not.

I don't think i would EVER take onside... because i would not know how to teach myself...

I know! And then teachers say you're not taking the course serious enough or that you are slacking off when you really aren't! lol I feel so stupid when that happens...I do so bad even though I try hard...I know I can do better I just don't know what other ways to approach things like trying not to freeze during a test...etc....it sucks! lol

The one thing that gets me madd is the fact you study your bum off for the last few nights and you know the material cold turkey and you actually feel confident and have confidence in yourself to write the test .. and you even study before the test so know it even colder. The class is here to write the exam. And the teacher "individually" passes them around wiht the it flipped over and you have to wait that much longer to begin and then the teacher says begin and you turn it over and you black out and you have to take five minutes trying to remeber your student id and your name

...is anyone else somewhat saddened by the new 30-1 class on here?? I feel sooo replaced. well, not actually, and I know life goes on and all but... just a touch of nostalgia. (*and yes, I am that cool that I still log on. haha*)

I know, eh?

If your reading this, Mr. Gibson Dodd... I have no intention of posting in the new classes' forum... except, can we use that math help board? Maybe there will be some fellow calculus sufferers in your class...

Uh. I just got them too.

Lets say I bombed the diploma. Yes. Bombed. My mark dropped 4 percent overall...

It was the multiple choice that killed me, too. I got 70% on it.

I'm sorry about the diploma exam. The multiple choice is rough, I know. We're going to be talking about vocabulary building strategies tomorrow at our English meeting. We need to do more in this area.

As far as the math goes: go for it! So far there have been no takers; mind you, no one has asked any questions either!

Unfortunately for me, I opened up that envelope with great anticipation and found my average dropped 12 percent.
I was heart-broken at the time cause I knew I tried my best. So.... I'll have to rewrite both parts in June. I don't want to challenge my mark, cause the possibility of my mark going further down like Social 30, well I'm sure its not worth the $25. I just gotta be a man and redo it...

Ouch.. poor you.

Mr. Gibson Dodd... is it possible to re-do just the mult choice? I really dont want to re-do the essay because I dont think I would be able to get a better mark without having just had english and having novels fresh in my mind...
