Rory was alone in a vast expanse of sky and sand; it was hot and windy with all kinds of mirages on the horizon wherever he looked. He stubbed his foot against something in the sand, so he stooped to see what it was: a glass apple with a golden leaf coming out of the top. How strange. What was it doing out here and who would have left it here? He turned it over in his hand, rubbing the granules of sand off the top and the creases of the leaf. There were air bubbles still trapped in the centre of the glass. As he looked into the glass apple he realized his strange surroundings were even stranger, the horizon being turned upside down. But what was that in the tiny air bubble!? It seemed to swell larger and larger until it seemed to envelop his vision and his imagination and he was suddenly trapped in a kaliedescope of images that faded, flickered, and swirled around him in some futuristic fashion that zoomed forward and backwards through time. What was that? A giant snake that was so long it could swallow a crocodile in a single bite? And in its grip, a beautiful tree with limbs and leaves reaching to a blue sky, peppered with red apples with gold stems.
“Holy shi$! Where are my clothes! And who are you?!”
“What kind of question is that?! Are you mental? I’m the same person you’ve been with for the last week! Remember, I came out of one of your ribs?
“Whoa! That’s some kind of scar!”
“Say, do you want a bite?!”
“YOU SHALL NOT EAT OF THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE, KNOWING OF GOOD AND EVIL!”
“Yikes, what the hell was that?!”
“Oh, just ignore that; it’s just Him again. I say, what the hell. That giant snake behind you, the one that could swallow a crocodile in a single bite, she tells me that she’s a metaphor of a different religion, known as a gylany, and she says that He’s just jealous and not to bother. Besides, don’t you want to know things? Here, take a bite.”
Suddenly things went weird again and he was in a cyberworld, visiting www.hotel-duchampdemars.com and it was all white with nothing in it and he heard voices,
“Here, show me that address in the paper again. The address must not be right.”
“Well here it is. Just google it.”
“What’s the hotel’s name again?”
“Hotel du Champ de Mars.”
“Okay, here it is. Oh, the address was wrong.”

Rory looked at the website wondering why he was there when suddenly he felt a strong jerk upwards and he was flying at 500 km/hr straight up into the heavens on a space elevator, the newly created invention of the physics engineering team from the University of Alberta. |

I'm not sure I understand. Do the protagonist's leaps through time/space/dimensions represent progress that can only be made by taking English?
Also I don't understand why the reference to gylany is there. Isn't that something to do with equality of the sexes? And if so does this story cast God as a villain? |
