Johnny's fish Sam died today. Oh dear, what to do. Well, it's still earlier so Joanne could run out before Johnny wakes up and buy a brand new fish that looks exactly the same and Johnny would be none the wiser. Maybe Johnny overfed the fish and accidently killed Sam. Maybe it was Joanne who can be a bit enthusiastic herself about how much fish food she sprinkles into the aquarium every night.

Or? Joanne could just leave little Sam to float around, belly up, for Johnny to see when he wakes up. He'll cry many tears and if he ever figures out that he's responsible for killing his new best friend, he'll have a complex for years to come. What to do.

Joanne decides to go outside to think about it and takes with her some Round Up for the Quack grass in the front lawn where Johnny plays with his toys. The brand new power towers loom in the distance where the new Heartland Project is installing its new transmission line. It's 2012 and a meteorite is going to go shopping for a fish at the Earth store today....

What should Joan do? Help her out before 2012....

I'm not sure if I would replace them or not. Because every time you see the kid get excited about them you would feel guilty just knowing about the truth. Plus then what if one of the replaced fish were to die? As much as we want to, we really can't protect kids from everything. It's good to be honest. Maybe they could go together and pick out new fish.

Fair enough but what if it was Johnny's fault for killing the fish? WhAt if Johnny was suicidal? I know that's kind of rare for a four year old but let's say he's fourteen and maybe it's not a fish but it's his pet iguana?

I think if Johnny was fourteen years old he would have some morals- or I would hope so. If I was his parent I would confront him about it and probably not get him another one. Johnny would have to earn the right to have another pet if he purposfully killed it in the first place.

I think that it would be best to tell johnny that his fish had died, but do so in a way that he would understand and could relate too with his four year old mind. Perhaps have a ceremonial flush down the toilet and say that he is going to the great big sea where he can swim forever? Let him know that he is now in a better place. or i guess any other ideas that you have?

I think that when your kid is four the best decision you could make is to get a new one, you shouldn't introduce him to death unless you really have to until he can fully comprehend its significance, if it was his iguana though i would probably tell him he died but not whos fault it was.

Maybe this is a stretch, but the last part really got me thinking that this was not about a new fish for Johnny at all.

So here's the idea I'm getting:

This seems to be a case of knowledge versus ignorance, blindness or sight - a serious red pill/blue pill dilemma. According to new developments in the science of predicting our inevitable doom, the new power towers are sure to give little Johnny a great big malignant tumor. The herbicide will probably do something close to the same. So it seems Johnny is as doomed as a planet on a collision course with a gigantic meteor.

Do we share with him the truth about our fragile existence? the knowledge that all life must end in death and that he too can be the cause of it?

Or is ignorance bliss? Do we leave him to play in the toxic grass for a just a few more years with peace of mind?

Is there a truth to be learned for us as well? Maybe it is so great and terrible that it might provke some deep change, undermining the foundation of our very existence? Maybe not even a visible, tangible change, but a change in our hearts and minds. Is it worth it, to go through so much trauma, the blinding white light, before the Aztec calendar ends and were all wiped out of existence anyways?

What if we had until 2012 to make a choice?

What would you do?

i would take little jonny boy and tell him that hiw fish had died, and explain to him that everything has a start and an end and that we would be able to go and get another fish if he would like, i think it is important to be honest, if it was jonnys fault for killing the fish i wouldnt tell him i would moniter his feeding technics and express to him my concerns when i see a problem,

Is there really an answer to what would be the right thing to do, there are far to many factor to consider in that equation. what you would do if it happened today may not be what you would do tomorrow. there is know way to be certain of what you would do. the near limitless amount of variables that make up what you would do could easily boggle your mind if you where to try and think of everything at once. like i said there is know right answer, but only the ones that WE think are right.
